You don't have the right to wear David's Star. You should have been dead a long time ago." I sat back down. All was silent. Then one girl started to clap. Then another. Soon the whole barrack was applauding my speech. I smiled, for I had given these girls hope in the face of death.

Dear Diary,
I feel a little better today. My wound is healing, slowly, painfully, but at least I can walk. Today we got a small meal of "bread", which is actually a solid mixture of sawdust and flour, and some thin soup for breakfast. One girl said that this meant it was Sunday. So yesterday was Sabbath. Hm. What a Sabbath. Well, aside from that, little Tamra has made some new friends. Two little girls in the bunk next to ours. I think their names are Dayna and Joli. They look to be about 5 and 7, just perfect for Tamra, who is 6. They're not sisters, but they stick together like Siamese twins.
